It is one of the technological milestones that vehicles propelled only by electricity but not with petrol or diesel. Several cars are in the market employing this feature. Popularity for electric vehicles has been accelerating day by day. Amidst the boom, what if we could have roads that can charge these cars while driving on them.
Electric Cars
Unlike ordinary cars, electric cars use electric motors for their propulsion instead of internal combustion engines. These motors are powered by rechargeable batteries employed in these cars. These batteries are usually charged at the respective charging stations. Electrified roads make possible this battery charging while the vehicle is running on the road.
Car-Charging Roads
The first electrified road was developed by Sweden in 2013. Their e-highways are employed with electrified rail system that enabled the propulsion of electric cars. A movable arm in the car acts as the connector to these rails.
Once the car requires its battery to be charged, it has to route to e-roads. While driving on these e-roads, the car also drives the movable arm to the rails on the it. Thus energy is transmitted from the rails to the battery.
Latest Test Runs
Several test runs on these we-roads have been done in many countries. Dubai RTA (the Roads and Transport Authority) has announced the test run of electrical vehicles on these roads on February 2020. The electric roads will contribute much to a sustainable infrastructure as they prevent the emission of gases from ordinary fossil fuels. So we can expect an e-road boom in the very near future.
