How does artificial rainfall occur in the UAE?

Rain is the water droplets from the clouds. These droplets are condensed from water vapor molecules in the atmosphere. The sun's energy rays evaporate the water content in the oceans, seas, and other earth surfaces that contain water. When the water evaporates, water vapor generates and rises up to the atmosphere. When they reach the atmosphere they get cool down and condense to form water droplets. This water content increases gradually and thus a visible mass to these condensed water vapors get generated which is termed as the clouds. The clouds will also be growing as the water vapor content in the atmosphere increases. Due to gravity, the water droplets fall down to earth which is termed as the rain.

Reduced moisture content in the clouds leads to scarcity of rainfall. The United Arab Emirates (UAE) is one of the water-scarce countries in the world. Lack of rain affects the whole life cycle. After conducting several scientific experiments, advanced technology made it possible; that is the artificial rain. Cloud seeding is the weather modification experiment which helps to make it possible.

The UAE is one of the first countries in GCC that used this technology for the artificial rain. This successful project began in 2010 and it is being conducted by the weather authorities of the Emirates. The cloud seeding technology has been successful in creating rain in the UAE.

CLOUD SEEDING
A self-taught chemist Mr. Vincent J. Schaefer invented the cloud seeding in 1946 with his experiments for General Electric Co.  The cloud seeding operations enhance the precipitation from the clouds. It disperses several condensing substances to the clouds and thereby modifies the weather conditions.

Potassium iodide, silver iodide, dry ice, liquid propane, and salt etc. are the major chemical substances used for cloud seeding. These materials are usually dispersed to the clouds by air crafts or rockets. When these materials are spread in the uppermost parts of the clouds, they stimulate the precipitation from the clouds. Thereby the rain occurs.

Several other countries like India, China, Australia, Africa etc. also used this technology to enhance the precipitation from the clouds. Hydration of agricultural crops and a good control in the weather conditions are made possible by this artificial rain. It has some other drawbacks also. This process needs to be regulated properly.  And also the overall cloud seeding process is an expensive one. Proper care should be taken while dispersing the chemical substances in the clouds so that it should not affect the life cycle on the earth in a bad way.
