Are you confused with the concept of LED/LCD TV ?

Today's television (TV) market is flooded with wide varieties of televisions like LED, LCD, Plasma etc. We often have many thoughts regarding their price, current consumption, display etc. This article deals with a comparison of LED (light emitting diode) TV and LCD (liquid crystal display) TV.

Today's display unit market replaces traditional cathode ray tube technology (CRT) with flat panel display (FPD) due to its lower power consumption and light weight.  Both LED and LCD televisions employ this FPD technology.

LCD TV uses the modulating property of liquid crystals for the display of images on the screen. The liquid crystals cannot emit light of their on unless supported by a back light. Traditional way of back light support is through cold cathode fluorescent lighting (CCFL).  When the purpose of back lighting is full filled by light emitting diodes, there comes the birth of LED TV or also called LED backlight LCD TV. These days traditional lightings are replaced by light emitting diodes.

Advantages of LED TV over LCD TV

  • The CCFL technology in LCD systems makes higher power consumption. The usage of light emitting diodes as backlight source  reduces the power consumption to a good level. So LED TV has lesser power consumption when compared  to LCD TV.
  • Better life span.
  • Improved color spectrum.
  • Lighter and cooler.
